Being dark brown to nearly black in color, Walnut possesses grain patterns that are mostly straight.  But occasionally, curly or wavy grain patterns can be found.  The fact that it is considered a relatively hard timber, make it a good choice for clock cases, high quality furniture and even rifle butts and gunstocks.
