After every cleaning, cutting boards and butcher blocks should be treated with good quality food grade oil.
When constructing anything for exterior purposes, try to orientate wood growth rings, whenever possible, so they arch upwards. This will limit the amount of moisture the piece of wood will hold, prolonging its use.
When painting, try using masking tape across the top of the paint can to run your brush over. This will keep paint from filling the groove around the can.
To prevent wood from splitting when nailing smaller pieces of wood such as moldings and trim, blunt the sharp point of the nail by tapping it lightly with a hammer before installing the nail. Submitted by: Corey Gushue.
